Start with the right expectations
Mount Kilimanjaro is an extraordinary high-altitude trekking destination. Reaching the summit involves more than physical fitness: preparation, gradual acclimatization, suitable equipment and decisions made on the mountain all matter.
Choosing a trekking route
Machame, Lemosho and Marangu are among the established routes. They differ in duration, landscapes, accommodation style and acclimatization opportunities. A longer itinerary can allow more time to adapt to altitude, although no itinerary eliminates altitude-related risks.
Fitness and training
Build endurance through regular hiking, longer walks with a daypack, hill training and other aerobic activity before departure. Practice using the footwear and clothing you intend to bring. Training should be appropriate for your starting fitness and health.
Pack for changing mountain conditions
Kilimanjaro passes through several climate zones. You may encounter warm lower slopes, cold mornings, wind and freezing summit conditions. Layered clothing, waterproof protection, well-fitting boots, a suitable sleeping system and sun protection are important.
Take altitude seriously
Acute mountain sickness can affect trekkers regardless of fitness. Learn the signs, discuss your personal medical circumstances with a qualified clinician before travel, and follow your guide’s safety instructions. Descent may be urgently necessary if severe symptoms occur.
